Dear friends,
Sometimes it seems like the internet stars just line up.

The other day, I happened across the New York Times Haiku Bot. As if I needed another reason to love the NYT; the times Haiku Bot generates "serendipitous poetry" from the times homepage. The one above, I found particularly striking and poignant so I took a screencap and continued thumbing through the haikus. A few hours later, I went back to the screencap and took a second to read beyond the haiku at the name associated with the poem: Edith Windsor. This immediately reminded me of another internets discovery that I thought would be good to pair with this haiku.

Now, I'm hoping that none of you have been living under a rock these past few weeks and are aware of the ongoing discussion with regards to same-sex marriage and the SCOTUS. Edith Windsor is a name that you've probably heard of if you've been paying attention to these discussions in relation to the case United States v. Windsor and her 40-year relationship with Thea Spyer.

As a self-professed socially liberal history major, I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I did not know who Edith Windsor was until about 2 weeks ago, when I stumbled upon the trailer to the documentary Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement, after which I watched the full-length documentary.

While I will save the details of my politics for a future post, I felt compelled to share both the haiku as well as the documentary with those who might read my blog. I do not know if what I share will either confirm or challenge your current perspective on marriage - whatever that might be - but I hope it provides some food for thought.

I'll leave you with this: somewhere in my internet explorations today I remember seeing the quote "Protect what you love." I spent part of my train ride home thinking about what it is that I love and wish to protect, and determined that one of those things was "love" itself. And having watched A Very Long Engagement, I can say that I found Edie & Thea's love to be a love that few are so lucky to find; a love that I want to protect.

I've recently read that the human body regenerates itself every 7-ish years. (Science people, please step in here if I'm completely misinformed). Our cells are constantly being replaced; we are constantly changing.

While I definitely have some more flushing out to do on my thoughts on the relationship between the physical and "metaphysical" "being" of a "person" (lots of scare quotes here that I will need to explicate in a future liberal arts essay), it's an interesting thought if taken to the extreme (or not even that extreme).

We are not who we were 7 years ago, and we are not who we will be 7 years from now; not due to some self-imposed or accidental acts of self-discovery, but because we have physically been, if you will, replaced.

Every weekday from 9am to 6pm, I sit in a dark room with two of my coworkers. There are no skylights, no windows, unless you count the glass partition that separates our room from the office hallway. We do have a nice view though - oh wait, that's just the wall decal cut in the shape of a city skyline.

Lit only by a floor lamp and the light of our monitors (granted, two of us have 27" mac monitors and we could turn on those horrific fluorescent overheads), we pass the hours in our cave, itching for an excuse to feel the warmth of the California sun on our skin. Do we really need to take that trip to Walgreens? The answer is "yes" if it is a sunny day, which - one should note - has constituted about 90% of my days since my move to the west coast.

I like going to work and have a pretty good time with my coworkers, but I'm beginning to think that the lack of natural light in our room is starting to effect my health, mood, and *heaven forbid* my productivity at work. The officemates and I have talked about sprucing up our room to make the space feel more...at least... livable. Bookshelves, desk lamps, inspirational posters - but I don't think we'll truly be able to escape our room's dreary "cave effect" until we punch a giant hole in the ceiling to let in some natural light. (If you couldn't tell, I just really want to bring in some plants to fill the space with more life, but alas, plants are really a no-go in a room without the very thing they need to survive.)

So, until we're featured in an episode of an Extreme Makeover: Office Edition or move office buildings, my space-envy will continue for whoever get to enjoy these light and life-filled spaces currently on my mind.

How do you feel about your office spaces? What are your *musts* for your workspace?

Yesteday morning, J and I drove to a neighboring town about 15 minutes from home to check out a potential studio space... and friends, I have to say it was love at first sight. Tucked away in the corner of a little park, the small studio sits atop a creek and has the most incredible natural light. Um, also there is ivy creeping in through the cracks below the windows. Is it weird that I find that absolutely charming?

God knows how this studio became available for me to find on Craigslist - I feel it's almost too good to be true. But... as of this afternoon, this beautiful space will be my future studio. The studio manager and I shook on it. (Apparently, shaking hands is her thing. Side note, she has been at these studios for 36 years).

The studio will be mine to move into this coming week and I'm sure I'll have more photos to share as I get settled. I feel like I'm jumping the gun by sharing these photos before I've actually moved in and officially secured this space as mine (how good are handshakes really?) but I couldn't help myself. (Is this how pregnant women feel during their first trimester?)

While it is not equipped with a printing studio like I'm used to, I'm sure I can make do. After months of dreaming about a studio space, this is literally a dream come true. Stay tuned, friends :) Really excited to get in there and start creating. Eep!

Friends have recently started asking me for updates on my studio practice, my art making since I've moved to California, and truth be told, I have not much to update them on. My 27" iMac at work has become my everyday companion and I haven't rolled out ink on tabletops in nearly half a year.

It actually terrifies me to admit this in writing, because I do not want to let them down - those who so graciously think that one day I will have a print show in the city. But where I am in my life right now, that guilt trip might be the factor that most motivates me to get back into a studio.

Self-motivation just doesn't cut it sometimes. So a heartfelt thank you to those who believe in me (more than I believe in myself) and hold me accountable to my creative potential.

This past weekend, I made my first post in the FREE section of craigslist.

The post was for my TI-83 graphing calculator, an object I've for some reason held on to for the last 7 years - throughout high school, college, through my move from Korea to New Hampshire to California. As a history and art major, I had absolutely no need for it in college, but it's always been there, in the heaps of sentimental "oh-it'll-be-useful-someday" stuff I seem to drag along with me wherever I plant myself.

Within 30 minutes of posting, I received a response from a man named Tom.

His yahoo email address sketched me out initially and I will admit that I ran through a number of kidnapping scenarios in my head (obviously too much Criminal Minds), but here was a man who was willing to drive 30 minutes to pick up a graphing calculator for his high school son. So we arranged to meet at the train station near my home.

The handoff was quick and friendly. He shook my hand, thanked me for doing this, told me his son will get great use out of this calculator, got back in his car and drove off.

A non-eventful event really, but it made me feel great.

I've started to think more about what kind of life I want and I think it's starting to boil down to the realisation that I want a simpler life. This doesn't mean I want to live in shapeless linen shifts in the middle of nowhere (although that doesn't sound terrible really), I want to make an effort to pare my life down to meaningful essentials.

I want to get rid of those other TI-83s in my life and curate an intentional, simple collection of beautiful, quality essentials in terms of the things I have, the home I live in, the relationships I have, the lifestyle I live. (Yes, I write this as I await the delivery of a pair of hot-pink J. Crew corduroys, but I anticipate a learning curve.)

I'm realising that simplicity is something I've come to value increasingly in the last few years, and I want it to be something that permeates the life I live.

Here's to taking steps towards a greater, simpler life.

Half a year into the so-called "real world," I'm finally getting around to looking for an art space to continue my studio practice. Ideally, this amazing studio would be part of my equally amazing abode, but alas, our 500 sq. ft apartment has no space for my creative mess, so off I go to search through craigslist. So far I've been surprised to discover the dearth of studio spaces available on the peninsula.

I actually scoped out a great studio space this weekend just a short bike ride from home, and as much as I loved it, it was above my price-point. Even still, I was considering taking the studio with the idea of finding a studio-partner in mind, but before I could even put out an ad to find someone to share the space with, I received an email this morning telling me that the studio had already been grabbed. Sigh. I guess it was not meant to be. If any of you know anyone in the bay area, please let me know if you hear of any studio availabilities on the peninsula!

With my real-life 20-something-year-old budget, I will probably be lucky to find a level table somewhere in a partially-sunny, communal studio space on the peninsula, but I thought it couldn't hurt to share several beautiful studio spaces that have the meat and bones of my dream studio.

Who's not to say that one day I'll be working out of a space like these?
This time last year, I could never have predicted I would be where I am now.

2012 has made me feel so blessed, in many unexpected ways. And while, I again have no idea what 2013 will bring, I am excited. I know it won't all be easy, with several curveballs thrown my way, but I'm determined to make it a good year, a year filled with love, creativity, and beautiful adventures.

I hope you will be a part of it.Do-Hee Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10388598875660911022noreply@blogger.com0California, USA36.778261 -119.4179323999999823.891121 -140.07222939999997 49.665401 -98.763635399999984tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5621190078237291158.post-25429730311146762282012-07-02T16:16:00.001-07:002012-07-02T16:16:30.367-07:00REAL LIFE / KITCHEN ESSENTIALS

Guided by the list of Kitchen Essentials from The Every Girl, I've been on a quest of sorts to seek out essential tools for the kitchen that I would actually purchase, essentials that are both aesthetically pleasing and budget friendly.

Hi ho, friends! Finally finding myself with some time to blog. Working two jobs keeps you plenty busy and tired.

In two months, I'll be leaving Hanover (along with it's less than ideal residential options) and moving to the west coast. J's been out there for a couple of weeks and has found an apartment with good bones for us to build upon. It's a small but functional, neutral and sunny space; and importantly, it comes unfurnished.

Needless to say, I've been going a little bit overboard dreaming about and planning the space and J's been patient enough to indulge my fantasies and put up with the million emails I send him with links to inspirational rooms, furniture, and accessories (curated on my pinterest). I'm envisioning a clean, minimal space evocative of the natural world; lots and lots of neutrals.... with moments of yellow ochre and pots of plants. (I'm currently obsessed with mid-century furniture, but that's for another blog post all together.)

Thought I'd share some of the spaces and pieces that have been on my mind. I'm referring to these as jumping off points as we curate pieces for the apartment. So dreamy, minimal, and beautiful with the essence of home. Stay tuned for updates in the future about what the space actually ends up looking like!

What are you envisioning for your next home? Share share!

In a town where the majority of buildings are not air conditioned, the summer heats already got me longing for Spring.

Emily, a dear friend my mine with an ear for pleasing tunes, sent over some cool tracks from the spring to share on the LP blog. So sit back with a cool drink and fan on a summer evening and give these tunes a listen. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Thanks Em! - D.

1. "No Way Down" by The Shins, Port of Morrow
The Shins' latest album, released in March, is shameless pop fit for spring or summer. Arguably the most upbeat of them all, "No Way Down" is totally infectious - catchy vocals and great guitar parts will have you grooving all the way to the beach.

2. "Why Must a Man Change His Ways" by Deep Sea Diver, HISTORY SPEAKS
Speaking of The Shins, here's a track from the recent LP released by their new guitarist, Jessica Dobson. Watery guitars, wailing vocals, and a rollicking 6/8 feel usher in those lazy summer days. This my personal favorite track of the spring - let's hope for more tunes to come from Deep Sea Diver.

3. "Calling Your Bluff" by POP ETC, Mixtape
New name, new sound! The Morning Benders are back as Pop Etc with some notable aesthetic changes. We do recognize, however, their tasteful integration of electronic sounds and 60's vintage influence. As with the MB's, POP ETC sports a lovably cluttered texture, but is always a good listen.

4. "Every Single Night" by Fiona Apple, Every Single Night - Single
This one's for Dohee. Breathless yet soulful vocals and minimalist accompaniment make for an unusual atmosphere. Overall, the track skirts the line between completely pathological and just plain brilliant.

5. "Sugarcane" by Reverend
And now for some local talent, here's a terrific track from Reverend (check ‘em out at Listn.to/reverendmusic!). Mellow yet heartfelt, heavy synth provides an ambient backdrop for warm vocals and interesting lyrical content. Try to catch the Rev live in the Boston area!

6. "You and Me" by Sara Watkins, Sun Midnight Sun
We finish off with a poppy track from the former Nickel Creek-er Sara Watkins. Crystal clear and harmonically regular, this one is simply a pleasure to listen to. The folksy accompaniment will have you singing along with the backup choir as you take a country drive - windows down, volume up - this June.
They're looking to launch in August, so be quick and go sign up to be one of the first to try out their fresh releases. Though I wont be wearing any benchwarmers - us ladies have a plethora of products to choose from - I've signed up anyway hoping to share with the men in my circle of friends.

Go check them out and read about the story behind their idea. I'm super excited for my friend behind this venture and I look forward to Benchwarmers being my go-to place to pick up some essentials for the boyfriend!

I recently read an article in the New York Times featuring the emergence of "Repair Cafes" in the Netherlands and I thought, "I sure would love one of these around!" Repair Cafe are events to which members of the community can bring whatever they want to have repaired - get this - at no cost, by volunteers who just like to fix things. Conceived by Martine Postma, Repair Cafes lead efforts to address our modern "throwaway culture" - a culture I'm totally guilty of being a part of at times.

I have a pile of dresses on my futon that have needed a little TLC for months and my trusty mac charger of 4 years is functional but dangerously frayed. I've found that the cost of getting these everyday items "professionally" repaired often equates to a hefty portion of the price I originally paid for the items, discouraging my budget-conscious student self from getting them repaired. And many times, I don't know where to go to get seemingly simple things repaired; who the heck can I turn to to get my stapler working again? It doesn't really make sense, but this all leads me to dispose of what I already own to purchase cheaper (and thus seemingly even more disposable) alternatives or replacements. Repair Cafes would provide opportunities for budget conscious individuals like me to make both wallet friendly and sustainable choices. Plus, I would finally be able to wear my favorite Zara dress out again.

The social implications of Repair Cafes resonate with me possibly even more than the ecological ones. This quote from the article particularly caught my attention:

I just love the idea of getting together with like-spirited people around me to use our individual skills to not only get rid of each others' headaches but also grow closer as a community through humble but significant actions. I could repair well-loved books or repaint old furniture while lending my ear to a spirit in need... I hope that the US follows the footsteps of the Netherlands - how lovely would that be to have a Repair Cafe in town? In the meantime, I'll pick up more manual skills to offer to the community.

What do you think of the concept of Repair Cafes? Would your town benefit from one? What would you bring to be repaired? What skills could you contribute?

Some of my personal favorites from the collection of cover designs for Nabokov's Lolita. While I wasn't a huge fan of the novel - understandably, I found the material a little rough to get through at times - it's fascinating to see how designers throughout time and place have approached the cover to the infamous book with designs as varied as readers' reactions to the novel.

Which cover do you find most appropriate for Lolita? Any thoughts on how the content of the novel should be translated onto the cover?

I think you might relate when I say that I often feel like I need to be a "trailblazer" of sorts - think of something no one else has thought of, make something no one has ever made, do something no one has ever done. And honestly, this sense of responsibility to be a "trailblazer" can be paralyzing at times as I turn inward to find that kick of genius. At times, it can be a fruitless struggle.

Let's just say that I'm thrilled to have re-discovered the magic of the library. I've come to truly appreciate through my time in the stacks just how many awesome people doing awesome things came before me/are working around me. If I want to be "trailblazer," I need to turn outward in addition to inward to know what paths have already been made and learn from what's being done around me. I forget that I do not and should not exist and work in a vacuum. This is something I'll say I've always known in the back of my mind, but really failed to take advantage of until very recently in my creative career.

So, when I find myself with the glorious gift of "free time" these days, I make the short walk to the art library, peruse the shelves, sit my butt down, and devour book after book. For many of us college students, the library seems like a pretty grim place to spend one's free time; it's Senior Spring, I should be partying it up, getting drunk, reveling in the last of my glory days as an undergraduate. But as someone who discovered her passion late in the liberal arts game, I feel a pressing need to take advantage of the resources provided by Dartmouth and the time I have as a student to get the information I want and need before I graduate and enter the "real world."
Type Connection is a game created by Aura Seltzer that helps you learn how to pair typefaces. You get to play the role of matchmaker and try to create successful typeface pairings based on given personality/dating profiles. I've found it to be not only a great educational resource for informing design decisions, but also just a wonderful site to experience. Aura creates an experience that successfully communicates and reignites the life, energy, and passion of/within designers as she infuses the typefaces with such tangible personalities that you can't help but become attached.

Give Type Connection a try! I suggest you challenge your design-appreciating partner/friends this weekend to see just how good your matchmaking skills are!

Warning: Reported side effects of playing Type Connection include severe procrastination as well as frequent reference to typefaces in conversation with non-design friends that often leave them confused as to who "Futura" and "Archer" are. Use with caution. But please, do give it a go!

Among the hundreds of choices presented to me on my pilgrimages to Barnes & Noble, each book only has so much to make a first impression, and in the sea of visual and tactile overload, a well-designed cover is what hooks and reels me in. I'm a huge fiction fan, always on the hunt for a good read, and as much as I'd like to say my book purchases are driven by a respect for content, I'm coaxed time and time again by beautiful covers. The well-designed cover whispers "pick me up, take me home, give me a chance," and for some reason I'm convinced that the content of the book will match the quality of the cover (forgetting, momentarily, how many times I've been wrong about this in the past).

Cover designs have not only informed my spontaneous book purchases, but have also served as rich sources of design & art inspiration and let's just say this is first of many posts to come featuring cover designs.

Enough of my chatter. This week's post features the designs of Trevor Baum. His concepts for Faulkner titles took my breath away. I love how the designs pay respect to the works of both Faulkner and the illustrious photographer Sally Mann. I hope these concepts go to print one day - I would love to have these on my shelf.
